You cannot touch fabric through a screen, but a good listing still tells you almost everything — if you know which five details to look for.

Poor lawn rarely announces itself at purchase. It shows up after one wash: colours dulled, the weave gone limp, the dupatta half a shade off. These checks catch most of it before the money leaves your account.

Four checks you can make from the listing

1.Zoom on the print. Sharp edges and clean fine lines suggest digital printing; soft or dotted edges suggest a low-resolution screen print.
2.Look for a daylight photograph. Studio-flat images hide weave and true colour; a daylight shot shows both.
3.Read the measurements. A listing that states shirt, dupatta and trouser lengths is a listing that expects to be checked.
4.Check the dupatta. If its width and fabric are not stated, assume it is thinner than the shirt piece.

Five checks once the parcel arrives

Hold it to the light: an even, dense weave shows a uniform grid rather than visible gaps.
Rub a damp white cloth on a printed area for ten seconds — colour transfer means the dye was not properly fixed.
Crush a corner in your fist and release; good lawn relaxes within seconds, stiff blends hold a hard crease.
Stretch across the width; excessive stretch usually indicates a polyester blend rather than pure cotton lawn.
Compare shirt and dupatta side by side in daylight to confirm the colours were printed in the same run.

The shrinkage test

Cut a 10 cm square from an offcut, soak it in cold water, dry flat and measure again. Two to three percent shrinkage is normal for pure cotton lawn and khaddar and can be handled by pre-washing the full piece. Above five percent, tell your tailor to add length before cutting.
