Most Pakistani wardrobes rotate through three unstitched fabrics across the year: lawn in summer, linen tana doria in the shoulder seasons, and khaddar in winter. They look similar folded on a shelf. Stitched and worn, they behave nothing alike.

Doria print lawn: the summer default
Doria lawn is woven with fine self stripes that give the surface texture without adding weight. It moves air, takes a print beautifully, and forgives Pakistani afternoons. Choose lighter grounds — ivory, powder, sage — for the harshest weeks, and keep saturated colours for evenings when the sun is off.
Linen tana doria: the in-between fabric
Linen tana doria is the most under-used fabric in the country. It carries more body than lawn, so a stitched kameez hangs cleanly instead of clinging, and it holds a deep colour without looking heavy. It is the right answer for October and for February, when khaddar is too warm by noon and lawn is too thin by evening. Accept the creasing — on linen it reads as texture, not neglect.
Printed khaddar: winter without bulk
Khaddar is a coarser, brushed cotton weave that traps a thin layer of warm air. A good khaddar suit replaces the need for a shawl indoors and layers well outdoors. Winter prints run warmer in palette — terracotta, rust, charcoal, deep olive — which is as much practical as aesthetic: those tones are simply easier to wear under a coat.
Telling your tailor the right thing
- Lawn: ask for a lighter interlining at the collar and cuffs, or the neckline will sit stiffer than the rest of the shirt.
- Linen: request a slightly relaxed cut. Linen does not stretch, and a tight linen kameez shows every seam line.
- Khaddar: a full lining is rarely needed. Line only the shirt yoke if you want extra structure.
Building a year from three fabrics
A workable rotation is four to five lawn suits, two linen and two to three khaddar. That covers twelve months without repeating too often, and because unstitched pieces can be stitched in different silhouettes, the same fabric can read formal one month and everyday the next.
