Stitching an Unstitched Suit: Styles, Measurements and Tailor Instructions

The fabric is half the outfit. This is how to brief a tailor so the other half goes right.

Buying unstitched gives you a fit no ready-to-wear rack can match — but only if the brief to your tailor is precise. Most disappointing results come down to three or four missing numbers, not the tailor's skill.

Choose the silhouette first

The measurements to hand over

1. 1.Shirt length, measured from the shoulder seam to where you want the hem to fall.
2. 2.Shoulder width, seam point to seam point across the back.
3. 3.Bust, waist and hip, taken over a fitted garment, not over loose clothing.
4. 4.Sleeve length and the loose armhole measurement.
5. 5.Neckline depth, front and back, stated in inches — never as 'normal'.
6. 6.Trouser length and the ankle opening width.

Write these on a slip and keep a copy in your phone. Once you have a set that works, every future suit is a five-minute conversation.

Getting more from the same fabric

• Cut the trouser first — it needs full continuous length; the shirt can be pieced at the sides invisibly.
• Use the dupatta's border for cuffs or a neckline piping if the shirt fabric runs short.
• For an A-line, ask for a two-panel cut rather than a single flared panel to save nearly half a metre.
• Save all offcuts. Enough remains from most three-piece suits for a matching pocket square or a child's kurta.

Mistakes worth avoiding

• Skipping the pre-wash, then finding a stitched shirt an inch short after the first laundry.
• Heavy interlining on lawn, which makes a summer shirt sit like cardboard.
• A tight armhole — the fastest way to make an otherwise perfect kameez unwearable.
• Matching thread bought by memory rather than against the fabric in daylight.

What tailoring costs in 2026

Expect roughly ₨ 1,200 to ₨ 2,500 for a plain suit in most Pakistani cities, and ₨ 3,000 upwards for detailed work with piping, linings or pleating. Even at the higher end, a curated unstitched suit plus tailoring generally lands below a comparable ready-to-wear piece of the same fabric quality.
