How Much Fabric Do You Need for a 3-Piece Suit? Metre-by-Metre Guide

Most disappointing suits are not badly stitched — they are simply short by half a metre. Here are the numbers tailors actually work with.

A standard unstitched three-piece in Pakistan contains three cut lengths: shirt, dupatta and trouser. Brands print the total on the pack, but the total tells you nothing about whether it fits your frame, your sleeve length or the shrinkage of the weave. These are the working numbers a Pakistani tailor uses.

Standard three-piece measurements

Seven metres covers a medium-length kameez to just below the knee, full-length straight trousers and a standard dupatta. Anything printed as a 3.5 metre shirt piece is generous and gives room for a longer cut or wider sleeves.

When you need more than the standard cut

• Height above 5 ft 7 in: add 0.25-0.5 m to the shirt piece for a knee-length kameez.
• Wide or flared trousers, sharara and gharara panels: add 0.5-1 m to the trouser length.
• Bell or angrakha sleeves: add roughly 0.3 m, more if the print is directional.
• Large repeat prints and borders: allow 0.25 m so the tailor can match panels.
• Lawn and khaddar that shrink 2-3 percent on the first wash: allow 0.2 m or pre-wash before cutting.

Directional prints eat fabric

A one-directional floral or a bold border print must be laid out the same way on every panel. That layout wastes cloth at each turn, and on a 2.5 m shirt piece the loss can be enough to shorten the finished kameez by two inches. If a print has an obvious top and bottom, tell your tailor before cutting and buy the longer piece where a brand offers one.

A simple pre-cut checklist

1. 1.Measure your favourite existing kameez flat, shoulder to hem, and add one inch for the hem.
2. 2.Compare that to the shirt piece length and the sleeve plan.
3. 3.Pre-wash lawn or khaddar in cold water if you are cutting close to the limit.
4. 4.Ask the tailor to cut the trouser first so leftover fabric can extend the shirt, not the other way round.
